In former times, men whose high level of testosterone fuelled their urge towards self-aggrandisement often gravitated into, or were conscripted into, the armed forces; they rarely shunned danger, and so if they served in the front line they were likely to be killed or maimed in combat — and their reward was to be called heroes. Nowadays, such men mostly gravitate into other occupations, where they make a greater nuisance of themselves.
